The commercial breakthrough of dubstep and the first singles from Skrillex almost coincided. Just then, around 2010, the American producer Skrillex (Sonny John Moore) released his first EPs and promptly became the standard bearer of the American dubstep, also known as brostep. … Skrillex's dazzling live show did very well and the typical elements of dubstep started popping up everywhere. For a while it seemed like the wob-wob-wob-bass - 'the drop' in dubstep jargon - had to be present in every dance track. At the time of the first full Skrillex album (March 2014) that storm has subsided a bit, although the record is in the spotlight. The nice thing about the versatile Recess is that the American offers space to British guest artists such as the Ragga Twins, thus honoring the British and Jamaican roots of dubstep. It is also striking that not all tracks are danceable or have anything to do with dubstep at all. Skrillex is already working on something new and that is to his credit. (JE)more
