The Jam Sessions is an awe-inspiring release from The Kyteman Orchestra full of improvised live recordings. The company led by Colin Benders gives the listener value for money, because the 14 “pieces” comprise no less than three CDs. According to Benders, the music was made without prior agreements or guiding ideas. They even relied on a specially developed sign language. These kinds of experiments
… often tend to be more enjoyable for the musicians involved than for the listener. The audience is not forgotten at The Jam Sessions. Cross-border fusion is often very accessible, to the point of being remarkable. It shows how well The Kyteman Orchestra is in tune with each other. These are jam sessions for people who don't like jam sessions. The musicians must have put more effort than it costs the listeners to listen to these pieces. And that is usually the other way around with improvised music. (JE)more
