Deerhunter's band members describe their own music as 'ambient punk'. The creature can only have one name, although that term says nothing at all. Perhaps the quartet wants to indicate that they really do look beyond their own indie rock street. Deerhunter plays alternative rock on Fading Frontier as it has been played for 30 years. Gently thrumming guitar lines, psychedelic echoes and a singer who
… sounds like he just got out of bed. Is that bad? Certainly not, because the songs are well composed. However, it is not clear why. Choruses don't really stick, and the songs aren't full of catchy hooks, but there is something that makes you put on Fading Frontier one more time. It is the first album after the car accident that sidelined singer / guitarist Bradford Cox for several months in December 2014. Cox has now recovered, and Deerhunter also sounds as usual. (PdK)more
