After the unexpected success of debut(2016), Lucy Dacus returns with Historian in 2018. Opener Night Shift already indicates in just over six minutes that we are dealing with a sensational album here. The song starts small, with only her vocals and guitar as supporting forces. After this the band steps in to push the song to an epic end point with overdriven guitars. It turns out to be no exception.
History repeats itself a few more times on the songs below. Pillar Of Truth and Addictions roughly follow the same laws. The explosive guitars and drums are supported here and there by tasteful wind instruments and strings. Lyrically, Dacus once again manages to impress with intimate stories. In doing so, she draws heavily from her diaries, which she has kept and kept for years. As the American sings about the situations in her life, that's how they probably actually happened. As a listener, that makes you, among other things, a spectator of the breakdown of her relationship. Perhaps a cliché among songwriters, but in her case it certainly produces a penetrating work of art. (JE)more
