Lakuta in Swahili means as much as finding, meeting or sharing. It is also the name of an afrobeat band from Brighton, founded by percussionist Cicely Taylor. The band members have their roots in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia and Europe. This origin can be heard on Brothers & Sisters, which results in a flaming mix of afrobeat, latin, Caribbean and tropical music. The whole has many influences
… from funk, soul and to a lesser extent reggae. In the ever-increasing range of afro bands, Lakuta can place itself in the most uptempo regions. The band doesn't allow itself a moment of rest. Everything revolves around the danceability, which is further fueled by Mattia Bourgis' full, drumming. Singer Siggi Mwasote is originally from the opera world, but followed her heart to the dance. This can also be heard in her rousing vocals. The pointy horn accents complete the party. (AD)more
