Nicolas Jaar is not what you would call a one-trick pony. Since his acclaimed debut CD (2011), the 26-year-old Chilean has been involved in a five-hour live improvisation, a soundtrack (for the film Dheepan), the experimental two-man band and the setting up of his own record label (Other People) on which he released a bunch of even more experimental recordings. … Jaar apparently set himself the goal of cramming all the aforementioned activities into barely 40 minutes of music. The good thing is: he largely gets away with that too. Sirens is - it may be clear - not an easy thing to do, but nevertheless invites repeated listening. You constantly discover new things, but at the same time it is striking how the sound artist always weaves a song in his sound carpets at the right time. Best examples are The Governor and the rousing Three Sides Of Nazareth. Exciting picture for those who don't like their electronics in bite-sized chunks. (RME)more
