A declaration of love, otherwise Out Of All This Blue cannot be understood. Love for the Japanese artist Rokudenashiko - the new wife of Chief Waterboy , who is sung in Payo Payo Chin - but certainly also for music. And that love is at least as wide as it is deep. Spread over two CDs (with a nod to one red and one blue) the listener is poured over almost 100 minutes of music, full of references to
… place names, genres and celebrities. Musically it varies from Scott's familiar 'Big music' from the early years of The Waterboys (the beautiful Morning Came Too Soon) and folk (Girl In A Kayak), to soul (Do We Choose Who We Love) and even a few hip-hop novelties. Not everything is equally successful, the lyrics occasionally balance on the edge of pastiche and some songs simply take too long. Still, you gladly forgive the man who gave us so much beauty, especially in the 80s. Even if it is only out of Love for Music. (RME)more
