The founders of the slowcore genre - tráááge guitar music with somber lyrics and minimal arrangements - are usually American bands such as , and seen. But with a little imagination you can also trace its roots back to Toronto, Canada, where in 1985 (at least 3 years before the mentioned bands) the Cowboy Junkies were founded by Margo, Michael and Peter Timmins and Alan Anton. Just listen to
… how the beautiful title and opening track of studio album number 16, All That Reckoning, ticks all the boxes of the slowcore. Elsewhere, the band, still in the original line-up, is inspired by two poems by the mystical Briton William Blake; The Angel (Mountain Stream) and The Tyger (Missing Children). Not a cheerful food, as the disturbing artwork suggests. But that the renewed acquaintance is pleasing, as is evident from the fact that the Cowboy Junkies returned to the British album chart for the first time since 1992. Nice and slow. (RME)more
