As long as Lucy Dacus doesn't run out of diaries, she can keep making beautiful music. For Home Video, her third album, she returned to her parental home in Richmond, where she started to leaf through the diaries she filled between the ages of seven and seventeen. Opening track Hot & Heavy is about seeing familiar faces again, adding 'you used to be so sweet, now you're a firecracker on a crowded
… street'. In terms of lyrics, the American is once again on a roll. For instance in VBS (Vacation Bible School) in which Dacus introduces us to her first boyfriend, who plays Slayer while he sleeps and writes laughably bad poetry. Also funny is how the acoustic Going Going Gone - a Boygenius reunion with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker - ends with a heartfelt 'Yeah, I think that's the one!' After which follows perhaps the most beautiful song, the alienating autotune-effect Partner In Crime. It shouldn't work, but it does. Like most of the songs on Home Video, on which fortunately some 'old fashioned' rocking is allowed. (RME)more
