David Crosby turned 80 around the time of the release of For Free in August 2021. It is his eighth album, the last five of which appeared from 2014. Before that, of course, he was mostly active within
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (in varying formations between them), but also struggled with the requisite demons in the form of substance abuse and a conviction for gun possession. Since
Croz (2014),
… Crosby seems to be in good spirits, working harmoniously with well-known colleagues and loved ones, such as his son James Raymond, who also plays an important role on For Free. The mood is set in opener River Rise, a melodic soft rock number where guest Michael McDonald makes his mark. That pleasant atmosphere, deeply rooted in the Laurel Canyon sound, is maintained with of course a leading role for Crosby's warm and dreamy vocals. Also special is his baroque portrait on the cover that was painted by contemporary Joan Baez. (MR)more
