With Everyday Life, it seemed for a while that Coldplay had had enough of the pure pop music they had made their own on previous albums like Mylo Xyoto (2011) and A Head Full of Dreams (2015). Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyday Life was probably too exotic for the average music listener and so the album failed to achieve platinum status. This is probably why the band chose to play it
… safe again. The Swedish producer Max Martin was hired to help the band get back to their stadium smash hits. There is absolutely nothing left of the sound from the early days of the band on this album. The guest appearances by Selena Gomez and the South Korean boy band BTS indicate that they are appealing to a younger generation of fans. The sweet electropop of Music of the Spheres will undoubtedly appeal to a lot of people, but the Coldplay of old will be missed a bit. Only the song People of the Pride, with its ferocious guitars not fitting in at all, really stands out. (JvQ)more
