Belgian singer-songwriter Meskerem Mees participated in the talent show Wie Wordt Junior? in 2013. Unfortunately she didn't manage to win, but luckily that didn't stop her. Armed with an acoustic guitar and beautiful cello arrangements from a friend, the Flemish girl lays her soul bare on this debut. Mees didn't want to go to the conservatory because an intensive way of playing the guitar didn't
… appeal to her. On this debut you can hear a more fleeting and airy way of playing, without it sounding simple or uninspired. Julius seems to have been created on feelings, with which the Belgian also gives the listener a peek into her head. It's not always cheerful there, but the weightiness is framed by very beautiful arrangements on this album. If Meskerem Mees can produce such beautiful songs with so few resources, we are curious what the future will bring. (JvQ)more
