For a moment Krezip was world news, when in early 2023 it was announced that drummer Bram van den Berg would be
U2's Larry Mullen during a number of performances. With that surprising fact in mind, a few months later you listen to Any Day Now just a little differently. Does this seventh studio album by the Tilburgers - the second since the reunion in 2019 - show traces of the Big Sound with which
… U2 conquered the world? And what exactly does this Van den Berg do so well? To start with the first question: on Any Day Now, Krezip sounds robust, but in a way reminiscent of Haim or the more recent work of First Aid Kit. Only the catchy In The Water contains a guitar line remotely reminiscent of The Edge. The U2 guitarist, by the way, answers the second question. He described Van den Berg in Rolling Stone as "a real powerhouse, but also a nice person to hang out with. Otherwise, it's downright enjoyable pop music that rings the bell here, with no really weak songs, and with Make It A Memory (duet with Danny Vera) at least another standout. (RME)more
