With his sixth album Everything I Thought It Was, Justin Timberlake tries to unite his old sound with a new and fresh slant. The languid opening track Memphis takes some getting used to and creeps by slowly, but after that, when you are presented with some uptempo songs, it already becomes more palatable. Once again, he worked with producers like
Timbaland, among others, who put a slick mix of pop
… and R&B under it all. Still, it pinches here and there; for example, songs like Technicolor last unnecessarily long and Timberlake once again found it necessary to make his album last longer than an hour. In doing so, the album has two sides: danceable and enjoyable on the one hand and slow and slightly jaded on the other. What is nice is that for the song Paradise, he collaborated with his old band *NSYNC. (YvQ)more
