We already knew that Rufus Wainwright is eccentric, but this career move astonished even those who have followed the man for a long time. A love for vaudeville and musical is one thing, imitating a full concert by Judy Garland goes very far. But when Rufus does something, he does it right. And so one fine day at the London Palladium, accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by Stephen Oremus, the
… concert now featured on this DVD was recorded, a perfect copy of the famous 1961 Garland concert at Carnegie Hall. After a somewhat nervous start, Wainwright becomes visibly in his element. As a self-proclaimed gay icon, he obviously allows himself some roguish comments in between, but his love for Garland is clearly genuine. In the challenging song material, he once again proves his almost careless singing talent. Towards the end of the concert there will be guest appearances from sister Martha and mother Kate McGarrigle. (MS)more
