The Upsetter is an entertaining documentary about the legendary reggae producer Lee Perry. Perry is a colorful figure for whom the word 'eccentric' seems to have been invented, but behind his unworldly facade hides a talented artist. Perry played a key role in the development of reggae and dub, producing albums of all the greats of reggae (Bob Marley, Junior Murvin, The Congos) as well as working
… with Paul McCartney, The Clash and Beastie Boys. In Old Testament language, Perry, a convinced Rastafarian, tells about his motives. The film also paints a grim picture of 1970s Jamaica where 'police and thieves' fought guerrilla warfare together. The events took a heavy toll on Perry, who, after years of depression, went into withdrawal from the rum and ganja. He retired to Switzerland. The lion's share of the interviews were therefore recorded between the snowy Alps. (PdK)more
