Alanis Morissette hasn't been very exciting on record since Under Rug Swept (2002), but she can still break a lot live. In any case, the Canadian singer has enough hits in her pocket to knock down an audience and the Montreux Jazz Festival is a breeze. There are always enough people who want to jump on Ironic or You Oughta Know among the hundreds of thousands of visitors. They don't come home from
… a rude awakening. Morissette and her band play a hell of a set and let the material speak for itself. No special light show, no dancers and few musical passages worth mentioning. It's only about Morissette's personal songs and her (sometimes inimitable) vocals. Her sighing and hiccupping vocals are also the only thing that really has a lot of character. The rest of the band plays very safe. That's a shame sometimes although Morissette is man enough to make the concert a success on her own. (JE)more
