Even now there was a sad tone even in cheerful songs such as Moonshadow, How Can I Tell You and Tuesday 'Dead. He even succeeded in making the hymn Morning Has Broken, which is popular in Great Britain and sung in many schools,
… still sound pathetic, despite the cheerful lyrics. The cause for this, it would appear, was to be found in Stevens himself: he was an extraordinary songwriter but above all a tormented soul. Stevens found the solution for this in his conversion to Islam. He won, but the listeners lost him.more
