Carmen Souza was born and raised in Portugal but has Cape Verde roots. Christian Souza developed her singing skills in the church choir and officially started her singing career in 1999 in a famous Portuguese gospel choir. On her solo album Verdade, her faith and idealistic view on life are clearly visible in the song lyrics that she writes and that have been set to music by one Yeshwa. Souza is
… the least traditional of the Cape Verdean artists: she sings in the Portuguese-Creole language, but musically she mixes Cape Verdean elements with soul, bossa nova and especially jazz at will. Her acoustic band is given a lot of space for jazzy improvisations. But above all, Souza impresses with her musical performance and dark and warm singing voice. The beautiful CD booklet features English translations of the lyrics and Souza's personal reflections on the theme of each song. The 27-year-old singer during this album is very promising! (SvdP)more
