The Loet van der Lee quartet was formed in 1987 and consists of Loet van der Lee (trumpet), Robert Jan Vermeulen (piano), Johan Plomp (bass) and Joost Kesselaar (drums). In addition to their own compositions, this quartet plays atmospheric renditions of the jazz classics Body And Soul and Lee Morgan's Desert Moonlight on this CD. For his own compositions, Loet van der Lee was inspired by big names
… in jazz. The title track Both Sides, for example, was written with Louis Armstrong's old Dixieland sound in mind. Tippin 'Brown is composed around a blues line played by Oscar Peterson and Freddie Hubbard on the album Face To Face. The dynamic Secret Player is inspired by Lee Morgan's composition Search Of The New Land. I Need You, also featured on the debut album Going Walkabout, this CD features a vocal performance sung by Fee Claassen. (CK)more
