Lilies is the third album and successor to the EP Blackened Cities (2016) by the Belgian-Italian singer Melanie De Biasio. The album opener does thinking, but it soon becomes clear that this lady is going her own way. A touch of jazz, a bit of blues and some scraps of trip hop. It all comes back in the warm sound of the singer. The soothing voice of De Biasio gives the whole an extra dose of warmth.
'Less is more', De Biasio must have thought. Musically it all remains very controlled on Lilies. With only a catchy guitar riff or some piano keys, the singer knows how to captivate a song effortlessly. Sometimes she doesn't even need more than her beautiful voice, because vocally she also knows how to impress. Lilies is full of velvety music and makes it clear that the word 'superfluous' is not in the dictionary of this artist. (JvQ)more
