Lisa Maffia is one of the members of the So Solid Crew, the English 2-step formation that seems to have more members than the Wu-Tang Clan and The Polyphonic Spree put together. The So Solid Crew presented itself as the new sensation of British dance but has so far made headlines more often for shootings, drugs and gun possession than for the music. Lisa Maffia now has the task to change this. On
… her debut album First Lady (2003), which was produced by several So Solid members, Lisa combines English 2-step and speed garage with American R&B. When that succeeds, the result is great, as in the first single All Over, a progressive R&B song that never really became a hit in the Netherlands. But unfortunately the American r & b and the songs are not very special because Lisa Maffia turns out not to be the most talented singer. Only at the end of the CD (Out Of My Life, Night Crawler) does the English sound return and the beats make up for any lack of singing ability. First Lady is not a bad CD, but it never gets really special. (IV)more
