After the experimental (2004) and the hardly accessible soundtrack for the film (2005), it could be misunderstood that Björk's sixth album Volta is a return to 'the old days', when she had mainstream success and sometimes a hit scored. Because indeed, super producer contributed to three tracks, and admittedly, all songs are a lot easier to handle than those on DR9. But Volta is still a CD that
… Björk could only have made now, and builds on everything she has done before. Literally even, because certain pieces from DR9 are 'reused' on Volta. It is an impressive album, which once again sounds different and innovative, and on which atmospheres and moods alternate. The main theme is the horn section, consisting entirely of Icelandic women. In the production this merges with sounds of the Malian kora (harp), Chinese pipá (lute), Congolese likembe (thumb piano), vocals by (without & The Johnsons), sometimes rock-hard beats and other exciting electronics to a fascinating whole.
