There's one thing you probably didn't know about reggae great Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert: he loves the blues. The first two songs of Light Your Light have an undeniably bluesy character with the slide guitar of Derek Trucks and the 'southern drool' of Bonnie Raitt, to which Toots' Jamaican accent initially colors a bit strange. From the third song on, the singer lands in more familiar waters: soulful
… roots reggae. Hibbert has often openly acknowledged his love for soul (he wrote the hit Reggae Got Soul) and for this album he adapted Pain In My Heart by his great hero Otis Redding. Toots wrote the Tribute To Coxson for its discoverer Coxsone Dodd, Studio One's legendary Jamaican record boss. Hibbert still has the talent to write some decent songs and because of his broad musical taste Light Your Light is a nice, varied record. (PdK)more
