Melody is the first album that Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri is releasing under her own name. While many solo albums are often a continuation of the work that the artist recorded with his group, the differences between Spiteri and Texas are significant. Perhaps driven by the recent renewed interest in soul music (think of Amy Winehouse and Duffy) Spiteri promptly comes up with a soul album. And the
… singer does that very well. The first two songs can compete with the best material from Dusty Springfield. The slow title track borrows the music of Serge Gainsbourg's song of the same name, but Spiteri has overlaid it with a different vocal line (and English text). While many pop artists are plagued by a creative impasse around the age of 40, Sharleen Spiteri shows enough inspiration and guts to be able to move forward several years. (PdK)more
