Uncompromising and bass guitarless, the New York trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs entered the music world in 2003. With their combination of staccato punk and biting art rock, the group, led by the assertive crowding stage beast Karen O, managed to bridge the gap between 'no wave' and the then prevailing wave of alternative guitar rock bands (The Strokes, White Stripes). After that O became the face of the flow
… of bouncy, white and artsy New York funk bands and she graced the cover of many hip fashion magazines. She seems to have lost her initial assertiveness, on It's Blitz she mainly sounds exuberant and she celebrates life. Musically positivity also predominates, with an old-fashioned whirring synthesizer as the main tool. The much sought-after producer David Sitek (TV On The Radio) undoubtedly played an important role in this development in which the group moves on to no less artistic but more infectious dance pop. It is striking that O also dares to show himself from a more vulnerable side in, for example, the sweetly swaying Hysteric. (MR)more
