The three band members of Doves spent no less than four years for the successor to Some Cities. The pressure was there, because Some Cities was a great success, especially in their own England. The record reached the top of the album chart and opening shows for Oasis and Coldplay brought the group to a stadium audience. The criticism of Doves was always that, despite its strong singles, the group
… could never hold the attention of an entire album. For this album, the group retired to a cottage in the English countryside with producer John Leckie (best known for his groundbreaking work on The Stone Roses' debut album). You can hear nothing of that in the hectic opening track Jetstream, but you can hear it in the relaxed title track. Doves' songs are without exception long and epic, something that seems to be the trend in contemporary British rock, based on Coldplay and Starsailor. Kingdom Of Rust has become a varied album, which once again attracted positive reviews in the British press. (PdK)more
