Just 21 years old, but given the album title soul singer Rox has already released her memoirs with this CD. Doesn't matter, because with her mature voice she sounds older than her age. It is a voice that 3FM listeners may already know from the hit song My Baby Left Me. Roxanne Tatatei grew up in London as the daughter of an Iranian father and a Jamaican mother. She does not yet use that exotic origin
… for a unique sound. Rox's sound relies heavily on the work of English soul sisters like Adele, Duffy and Amy Winehouse. The production was in the hands of Al Shux, a talented boy who already wrote a hit for Jay-Z. Shux opts for a warm sound, based on the soul sound of the sixties. It is a warm bath in which Rox is given plenty of room to open her vocal box of tricks. She has a wide range, but it is not (yet) original on this debut. Fortunately, she does sing her soul songs with the necessary urgency. (PdK)more
