With artists such as Benny Sings, Wouter Hamel and Giovanca in the stable, DOX stands for a unique sound, somewhere between jazz, soul and pop. The Leiden singer Roos Jonker is the latest addition to the label and she fits perfectly into the picture. Jonker moves in the jazzy soul tradition that goes back to Syreeta and Minnie Riperton and has a contemporary representative in Corinne Bailey Rae.
She recorded her first album at home using a laptop, piano and harp. This results in a wonderful combination of measured beats and jazzy improvisation, at the same time intimate and distant. Musically there is plenty to do, but Jonker still has too little heart on his tongue so that Mmmmm ultimately does not want to become more than a somewhat clinical showcase for her considerable talent. We are already looking forward to the sequel. (MS)more
