Kris Berry's debut album is rock solid. Marbles is an exotic jazz album with some soul influences here and there. Berry, who could already be admired at the North Sea Jazz festival before the release of her debut album, seems to have listened carefully to the American jazz singer Norah Jones. However, where Jones often dives into country jazz, Berry opts for more Caribbean and Latin American influences
… in her songs. This can partly be explained by the fact that Berry's roots are in Curaçao. What is striking besides the cheerfulness that songs like Second Best, Love Trip, Marbles and Stick To The Recipe radiate is the ease with which Berry recites her songs. Both the high and low notes seem to cost her hardly any effort, which confirms her talent. This cheerful debut album already has a taste for more and is the ideal backdrop for a warm summer evening.
