Marike Jager belonged to the garde of lovely female singer / songwriters, dealing in pleasant pop with a slightly personal but never confrontational profound slant. A tidy but also somewhat boring exponent of Dutch prosperity, you could almost say. On her third album she seems to want to deal with that image and (in accordance with the title) she is looking for more dark and theatrical atmospheres.
In this she makes an energetic start with the almost Kurt Weil-like title track and then, with her smooth voice, she lashes out surprisingly in Listen To Your Baby. Unfortunately she cannot keep up and the small, acoustic songs of old take the upper hand as the album progresses. The mix of the eccentric American producer Tchad Blake cannot add much to this. The whole thing makes Here Comes The Night Hunt's most varied and daring album. Hopefully she will dare to show herself even more of her rough side in the future because she likes it. (MR)more
