The break that Belle & Sebastian took both on stage and on CD lasted four years. The latest records Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003) and The Life Pursuit (2006) finally brought the band (financial) success after years of praise from the corner of music connoisseurs. It was time for a hiatus that is now being closed by Write About Love, an album that has been truly anticipated. The Scottish band
… led by Stuart Murdoch has not forgotten how to make good music, because the eighth studio album is a gem. As producer Tony Hoffer has worked for both alternative and more commercially oriented artists, this CD is perfectly somewhere between spiky and sweet pop. It turns out to be an ideal combination: a good melody is never far away, but neither is an interesting musical discovery. Only sour people will use against the band the statement that Write About Love with only light pop songs could just as well have been called The Life Pursuit Volume Two. With such good CDs as a result, Belle & Sebastian can go on holiday for four years more often. (JE)more
