Where Caro Emerald has a lot of success in the Netherlands with the combination of jazz and beats, Eliza Doolittle manages to achieve the same in England. The debuting singer mixes current production techniques with samples of old standards in the same way and also has song material with a lot of jazz and soul influences. The difference is that Doolittle has a completely different voice and sounds
… more like Lily Allen. Certainly in terms of phrasing, these two young ladies look alike. It is not entirely coincidental that producer Greg Kurstin, well-known by Allen, is the man behind much hip female pop anyway, taking care of two songs on this CD. The trick of the synthesis between old and new pop elements is repeated on the other eleven tracks, but it never gets boring. Doolittle is a good singer, has written a ton of catchy songs and her producers keep the production clear and varied. A singer who can sing in the same sentence about downloads and about 45 rpm singles without sounding forced is completely on the right track and can appeal to young and old. (JE)more
