Singer / guitarist Dave Grohl regularly asks for compassion. Not only in his songs, born out of frustration, full of soul pain, but mainly because he just can't shake off his Nirvana past. Everything he makes is compared to that of his old band. Maybe that's why he and his buddies from the Foo Fighters amply refer to Nirvana on their seventh record. If you can't beat them join them, can't you? First,
… production is in the hands of Butch Vig, the man behind Nirvana's breakthrough album Nevermind. Secondly, bassist Krist Novoselic joins in for a song and Pat Smear, the fourth member of Nirvana for a while, is back on the old front. Still, Wasting Light is just a Foo Fighters record with a few gems and a ton of average rockers. At no point does Grohl's past really come into play, other than the angular style of Queens Of The Stone Age, that other great band he was once a part of. The next time the Foo Fighters enlist the help of Josh Homme, Chriss Goss and Mark Lanegan, we should really start to feel sorry. (JE)more
