The quartet The Dead Trees was founded in Boston and, after a stopover in Portland, settled in Los Angeles. The group received support from Albert Hammond Jr. and Fabrizio Moretti, both from The Strokes. A name that immediately indicates in which musical corner The Dead Trees can be found. What Wave features cheerful, almost sunny indie pop in which The Strokes, Eels and the inevitable Beatles
… resound. The Dead Trees do this in such a way according to the indie book that it almost becomes special again. Singer and guitarist Michael Ian Cummings sings his catchy melodies and mildly critical lyrics with a dosed bite and the guitars sound gritty and whimsical but never go out of control. The Dead Trees are especially unpretentious, but What Wave is ideal for livening up a sunny summer day with a cheerful moppie alternative. And that is an art in itself. (MR)more
