As Rumer, Pakistani / British singer Sarah Joyce caused one of the big surprises of 2010 with her debut album Seasons Of My Soul. A record with an organic and vintage sound, referring to the seventies sound of The Carpenters in particular, but at the same time full of personal, warm and intimately sung songs. On Boys Don't Cry she now harkens back to the seventies with a collection of soft rock and
… melodic pop by artists such as Gilbert O 'Sullivan, Todd Rundgren and Hall & Oates. She ignores The Carpenters, but this collection of covers could have been performed effortlessly by brother and sister Carpenter at that time. As a result, Boys Don't Cry most resembles a The Carpenters album, thought to be lost. Does not mean that it is a pleasant listening record, but it would have been even more interesting if the early thirties Rumer had opted for a little more music of her own time. (MR)more
