American Mark Lanegan is not a versatile singer, but by entering into many special collaborations he is building a varied oeuvre. There, Black Pudding attests that it came about with Duke Garwood. This British multi-instrumentalist has previously lent his playing to Wire, Kurt Vile and Savages, among others, and played on Lanegan's latest solo album Blues Funeral (2012). Lanegan somewhere calls
… Garwood his favorite musician and is now looking for calmer waters with him. A bare rhythm box sets the beat and bluesy acoustic guitars or a lonely piano create beautiful and desolate soundscapes in which Lanegan's grainy and melancholic baritone comes into its own. With folky drones and thin guitar effects, the atmosphere remains subdued and dark. Only in Cold Molly does it swing gently. Especially by leaving a lot and letting less be more, this duo complement each other beautifully on the inspired Black Pudding. (MR)more
