Irish singer / songwriter James Vincent McMorrow raged across Europe in 2011, following his excellent debut Early In The Morning. With his high voice and organic sounding accompaniment of guitars, banjos and soft strings, he nestled effortlessly between Ray LaMontagne and Patrick Watson. On Post Tropical the singer distances himself from that: the record is rich in synthetic instrumentation and the
… production is bombastic. McMorrow has made a clear choice for strange sounds and less obvious arrangements. That's a bold choice if your audience is made up of people who follow you because of your songs and not so much because of your artistic progressiveness. Fortunately, the songs are not snowed under by the modern sound. His voice sounds smoother than ever and he uses that elasticity to sing just about any note that the key of the song allows. This is a record that takes some getting used to. Those familiar with James Vincent McMorrow hardly recognize the acoustic singer / songwriter and those who didn't know him yet have to get used to that strange high-pitched voice that cuts through everything. Post Tropical needs time to settle in, but it is well worth it. (HF). but that is well worth it. (HF). but that is well worth it. (HF).more
