American Jack White might be the last eccentric hero to have produced rock. He once formed the popular duo The White Stripes with drummer Meg White but when similar line-ups started to pop up all over the world, White gave up, made a name for himself as a producer and almost hid himself as a band member of The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. After some failed jet-set relationships and a stranded
… marriage, he made his debut under his own name in 2012 with the eclectic Blunderbuss. Lazaretto is the unmistakable successor to that, because although the album as a whole has a seventies vibe, it does not let itself be pinned down to any style. A rock song full of theatrical bombast like Would You Fight For My Love? is preceded by the traditional country song Temporary Ground and followed by the dragging Led Zeppelin rock from High Ball Stepper. On Blunderbuss, White seemed to have to sing his failed marriage, on the musical playground Lazaretto he seems to be having a great time. (MR)more
