In a Scottish joke, God is creating the world. 'I give the Scots beautiful mountains, lakes, cliffs and fertile valleys full of minerals'. "Aren't you a little too generous now?" a watching angel asks. "Oh, just wait until you see which neighbors I give them." Musically too, the five million Scots are blessed with many artists who are barely inferior to their dominant English neighbors. King Creosote,
… who grew up as Kenny Anderson in Fife, is also a Scottish talent. Like Stuart Murdoch (Belle & Sebastian) and Fran Healy (Travis), he has a melancholy, fragile gasp in his voice that the Scot apparently has a patent on. From Scotland With Love is the soundtrack to the documentary film of the same name. That film is a montage of amateur and archive films that show a hundred years of daily life in Scotland. The eleven varied songs of King Creosote are therefore a tribute to the common man: the Scotsman who, against the current, colors his life with music and humor. (PdK)more
