The second album by Brandon Flowers is a minute on the way, when the hired background singer ignites in a glowing 'Dreams come true, dreams come true, yes they do'. This immediately set the tone for The Desired Effect. No, Flowers will not easily be associated with a Nobel Prize in literature. … resulted in the successful Flamingo in 2010. While he stayed quite close to The Killers, Flowers (who produced the moody closing track The Way It's Always Been) fans out on The Desired Effect. From the soulful Dreams Come True, via Can't Deny My Love, which refers to Dotans Home, to the shameless eighties pastiche I Can Change, provided with a Bronski Beat sample and a contribution from Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant. Wrong? Maybe, but it somehow works. Like most of this unadulterated pop album simply works.
