After Marvin Gaye released his masterpiece in 1971released, he immediately started recording You're The Man, a politically charged single in which he expressed little confidence in the presidential election between Nixon and McGovern. Motown record boss Berry Gordy had so little faith in this that the record had to do without the much needed publicity campaign and did not bring the success that
… Gaye had hoped for. The album of the same name, which was only released in 2019, is not a successor to What's Going On, but a collection of previously unreleased singles and recordings that have remained on the shelf at Motown. Although these songs are certainly not some of the best Gaye has ever released, fans of his sweet voiced voice will be very happy with this collection. Moreover, a mediocre Gaye song is still heavily above the average soul song in terms of quality. (AD)more
