On Sunset is already the fifteenth album by Paul Weller who, after and , has a fruitful solo career. While he was the more modest singer-songwriter with acoustic guitar songs on (2018), he brings out the bombast on this album. You can hear in his weathered voice and prominent horns undeniably the of (2016) back. In a pleasant way, Weller sways in all kinds of directions with cinematic arrangements,
… soulful music and a good dose of funk that he has translated from the 1970s to the present. The songs are beautifully recorded, with a lot of emphasis on details. The impressive opening track Mirror Ball is a seven-minute suite with abrupt tempo and style changes. In More he builds up to an explosive guitar solo on the basis of various instruments such as lute, flute and a compelling brass section. Despite the many side roads he takes on this album, the title hints at the constant sultry bottom layer he maintains on this album. It is therefore not surprising to say that Weller can still call himself the Modfather without any shame. (JvQ)more
