'The sharp edges are off,' Muziekweb concluded about Biffy Clyro when the album (2016) was released. That does not apply to A Celebration Of Endings, the eighth album by the Scottish formation. It can be heard that the band profiles itself more as a stadium act, but that is certainly not straightforward with Biffy Clyro. The fat guitar riffs keep on rumbling and within the songs the collective
… applies a lot of tempo changes. Sometimes the group mixes a touch of prog rock in the whole. Dutiful moments of rest such as Space last the least, but the intensity into which the band immerses the listener would not be sustainable for the entire playing time. It is clear that the fire in Biffy Clyro is still burning at full power, which is best reflected in the extravagant and hard-hitting final song Cop Syrup. (JvQ)more
