A combo made in heaven: Lucinda Williams and
The Rolling Stones. The American country rock singer did well to save the sixth and final volume of Lu's Jukebox for songs by Britain's most famous and oldest rock and roll band. She also chooses exactly the songs you would have hoped she would choose beforehand, taken from Stones albums such as
Sticky Fingers (1971) and
Beggars Banquet (which the cover
… is also based on). Only Exile On Main St. (1972) conspicuously shines among repertoire from that prolific Stones period between the late 60s and mid-70s. Williams band can let loose in songs like Sway, Time Waits For No One and Sympathy For The Devil. Guitarists Stuart Mathis and Joshua Gange, in particular, have the time of their lives as they dance around each other roughly. Country rock diva Williams appropriates the songs and with her raw and intense recitation gives new tough dimensions to such crackers as Play With Fire and Dead Flowers. (MR)more
