Singer Brittany Howard broke through with her band
Alabama Shakes thanks to their album
Boys & Girls (2012). The rock and soul group was a beacon of hope for many guitar rock fans, at a time when traditional rock bands were increasingly losing popularity. However, Howard wanted to go in other directions, and after follow-up
Sound & Color (2015), the band announced an indefinite break. Howard released
… her solo debut Jaime (2019), which received rave reviews. For What Now the title of her second solo record applies: to ask the question is to answer it. Howard seems to know perfectly well what she wants and what she can do. Rock, funk, soul, psychedelia and especially Howard's inspired voice: it all comes across equally convincingly on What Now. The album is not really easy to listen to, with exceptions such as the funky What Now. But that should not spoil the fun: What Now is an impressive album. (JV)more
