Few bands make their debut in front of an audience of 600,000 people. Emerson Lake & Palmer (ELP) was therefore not just any band, but a so-called 'super group', whose members had earned their spurs in illustrious bands such as The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster. The Isle Of Wight Festival was the English counterpart of Woodstock, a large-scale festival where almost all legendary bands
… from that time made their appearance. After the release of the CD in 2002, the images of the first ELP concert can now be admired in full. On the DVD The Birth Of A Band, the band members and other parties involved elaborate on that historic day. The songs on the set list are also discussed, including the ambitious Pictures At An Exhibition, based on the classic piece by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, and the emergence of the Moog synthesizer, a revolutionary new instrument in those days that was first used by ELP in performances.
