Completely over the top. That is actually the only characterization that does justice to Bat Out Of Hell, the megalomaniac project of producer Jim Steinman and singer Meat Loaf. This DVD features the live show that followed the massive success of the album and the 1978 single Paradise By The Dashboard Light, as performed on the German television program Rockpalast. The sweaty images of the video
… clip are a generation of top viewers on the retina. All the original main characters are present: the unlikely love couple Meat Loaf and the graceful singer Karla DeVito, and the maniacal Jim Steinman who takes place behind the piano and also takes care of the announcements. Much of the repertoire has not survived the test of time, Meat Loaf sings as out of tune as a crow and the on-stage kiss is downright unappetizing. Yet it continues to fascinate, this strange mix of prog, glam rock and musical. An echo from the time when rock still dared to be vulgar. (MS)more
