The line-up of his band The Mothers (Of Invention), which Frank Zappa led at the time of albums like Roxy & Elsewhere (1974) and One Size Fits All (1975), is still seen by many as his best. Not surprising, since percussionist Ruth Underwood, keyboardist George Duke, drummer Chester Thompson (who later appeared in Genesis), bassist Tom Fowler and singer, flutist and saxophonist Napoleon Murphy
… Brock were not only charismatic personalities, but also virtuoso musicians. This band could play Zappa's complex pieces with a groove and also had a lot of fun, in which Zappa himself looked relaxed and especially showed his qualities as a guitarist. This DVD, a reproduction of a television movie of a live performance produced and edited by Zappa, shows all of this above to its fullest. You rarely see a group playing, improvising and entertaining with so much pleasure. Also special are the additional, dark psychedelic clay animations of Bruce Bickford. But it is mainly the images of this fantastic band that make this DVD indispensable for every rock fan. (MR)more
