The first blow is worth a daalder and with their debut album Appetite For Destruction Guns N 'Roses knocked many rockers to the ground. With their sloppy rock riffs, rugged looks and punky shit-about-everything mentality, the group posed some danger in the dozing-down musical landscape of the late eighties. But Appetite For Destruction proves that the group was also capable of writing memorable
… songs. Opener Welcome To The Jungle is a grim portrait of their hometown of Los Angeles and describes the city that Axl Rose saw when he, still young and bleu, arrived by bus from Indiana. The dangerous habits of the city proved irresistible and were the inspiration for many of the songs on Appetite. The quintet describes a turbulent underbelly full of booze (Nightrain), drugs (Mr. Brownstone) and sex (Rocket Queen, Anything Goes). With the singles Paradise City and Sweet Child O'Mine (including the recognizable opening riff of guitarist Slash) GN'R also scored big hits in the Netherlands and grew into a stadium act within a year. Based on this exciting debut, that was only right. (PdK)more
